Corporate Social Responsibility through Hospital Waste Management for Environmental Sustainability and Community Empowerment

Hospitals, as healthcare institutions, not only provide essential healthcare services to the community but also generate medical and non-medical waste that may pose significant environmental risks if not managed appropriately. This study aims to describe the implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) at Harapan Sehat Bumiayu Hospital through hospital waste management programs designed to promote environmental sustainability while empowering the surrounding community. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach by analyzing the Environmental Management Plan and Environmental Monitoring Plan (Rencana Pengelolaan Lingkungan and Rencana Pemantauan Lingkungan [RKL–RPL]) matrix, hospital profile documents, and data on medical and non-medical waste management. The findings indicate that Harapan Sehat Bumiayu Hospital manages hazardous medical waste (Bahan Berbahaya dan Beracun [B3]) in collaboration with a licensed third-party service provider, operates a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) (Instalasi Pengolahan Air Limbah [IPAL]), and enforces strict occupational health and safety standards for personnel responsible for waste handling. Beyond its environmental responsibilities, the hospital also contributes to the economic development of the surrounding community by creating local employment opportunities and stimulating the growth of informal economic activities in the hospital vicinity. The implementation of CSR demonstrates the integration of environmental responsibility and social responsibility in accordance with the principles of sustainability.
